Honey world Zimbabwe is a social enterprise which works with rural communities, empowering them to venture into beekeeping as business. We provide beekeeping training and support to all our out-grower farmers as well as ready market for their honey at harvesting. Our vision is to see rural communities in Zimbabwe gaining sustainable income from beekeeping enterprise as a social business and in so doing realise the value of forests and the need to conserve the environment.
In doing this, we are able to produce a reliable and authentic brand of honey for both the local and international market. Our Raw Pure Natural honey is growing to be a favourite brand for those who have tasted it. As as we work with communities, we are also engaged in various community development and disaster response projects in a bid to provide better care and support for our out-grower farmers and their communities.
The Zimbabwean Context
The story of Zimbabwe is that of a former agriculture giant that has dropped from being one of the main exporters of agricultural products to other parts of the world. The past few decades have seen the closure of many companies which has left the country with one of the highest unemployment rates on the African continent. Faced with this situation, the country has lost most of its economically active young men and women as they flee to neighbouring countries in search of income to support their families. It is believed that there are between two and three million Zimbabweans in South Africa and the sad reality is that even in South Africa many are still struggling to get steady income sources. As a result, a huge number of locals have been involved in activities which include illegal gold and diamond panning, drug trade and a wide range of other corrupt activities in a bid to make a living. Even more dire is the plight of women, children and a few young men who do not manage to leave their home villages where they continue to suffer.
But it is not all gloom. Zimbabwe has been blessed with a very good education system, a wide range of natural resources and great weather which creates opportunities for business ventures, provided there is capital. This is where Honey World Zimbabwe comes in. Honeyworld seeks to establish a long-term sustainable income generating project for the rural communities. While hand outs from NGO’S can solve the immediate needs, it is such projects as this one which will transform and empower these communities long term.
